Earlier this year we dropped our Build-Off bombshell when we re-wrote the rules and opened up the competition to anyone who wants to participate. Our hope is to create a “celebration of rat rod culture” more than a competition. We want to bring people together from all walks of life to enjoy each others builds, rat rod culture, and this incredible community regardless of tastes, build style, experience, or means.
To summarize the revamped Build-Off structure: Almost anyone can participate. Vehicle must be built during the 2016 calendar year. We’re looking for blue-collar, low budget, vintage, etc., but you’re welcome to bring whatever you want. Winner will adorn the RRM Issue #40 cover. Winners will NOT be revealed until AFTER the weekend events. (We want to surprise people and we’ll need the following week to gather all the votes and commentary.) >> Full rules HERE.
To enter – simply bring your entry to the Hawg Pit in Grafton, IL for the big event on September 24. You’ll register at the Rat Rod booth. The following morning (Sept 25) we will cruise as one caravan from Grafton along the Great River Road into St Louis for Shapiro Steelfest. Build-Off entrants MUST make the Great River drive under their own power to qualify. ALL cars, trucks, and bikes are welcome to join us for both events and the cruise whether they are in the Build-Off or not. Both events are free to enter, as is the Build-Off itself.
We will be shooting photos of the build-Off entrants all weekend at both locations. The cover winner will be shot the following week. The Build-Off issue of the magazine will be packed full of entrants and coverage of the entire weekend's events and will hit stores in November.
We also wanted to do something special/fun that was out of the ordinary, so we’ll be producing playing card decks. The decks will feature Build-Off contestants with special recognition for the winner(s). (There’s even talk of a Build-Off Legends deck featuring past competitors.) If you remember the card decks we released in 2012, you’ll know that these will be very cool and creative – not just pictures of cars slapped on card faces.
As mentioned, we hope to create a fun environment for all builders and enthusiasts to enjoy together – with a little extra incentive to bring out new builds. It’s all about the BUILD IT, DRIVE IT, ENJOY IT mentality. Come hang out with us and take in two amazing free events, a really cool cruise along the river, and some good old fashioned comradery.
Most people will stay in Grafton IL for the entire weekend: >> Lodging Info
